Rachel and Andrew’s wedding was guaranteed to be a full-throttle, high-energy day – one that I knew I would need to have a good night’s rest in preparation! We spoke the week before about the details and time line, and it was going to be jam packed! From the ceremony at the beautiful Old St. Mary’s Church in Greektown to a rock-and-roll reception up Woodward Avenue at the historic Fillmore Theater, the action was non-stop! In between the ceremony and reception, I jumped in the bridal party bus and hit the main stops along the Detroit riverfront photographing the wedding party!
I had not photographed a reception in The Fillmore before. I knew that it’s primary use was for hosting rock concerts. Because it’s calendar was booked with events, only a few wedding receptions a year could be squeezed in. When I heard that Rachel and Andrew had booked it for their day, I was thrilled! I love photographing in locations I have never been and to add a venue like The Fillmore was something I was looking forward to. Rachel gave me a pretty good description of the layout of the building when we spoke on the phone. There was a huge stage where the couple would walk out behind the curtain to see their guests for their introduction; a giant dance floor in front of the stage; tiered seating leading down to the dance floor and stage, where the dining tables would be set; a huge bar at the top of the seating; and a gorgeous entry way where the guests enjoyed their cocktail hour and the photo booth would be set up. When we arrived that evening after finishing up photos around the Detroit riverfront, I was blown away with the decor inside! I can honestly say that this venue is one of the coolest I’ve ever photographed a wedding in! The ornate statues and lighting, to the detail and carvings in the ceiling and pillars throughout! It felt like we were in the middle of a rock concert, but in contrast, it was the stage for the celebration of this very hip and cool wedding reception! All I can say is “outstanding!” It was an unreal wedding to be a part of and I am so happy with the results of the images we captured. My second photographer, David Yarnall, as usual, did a terrific job providing a second camera angle!
The day would not have been as successful as it was without the superb cast of wedding vendors! They included:
