Kate and Jason are one of my many clients who fall into the category of “living out of state, returning home to celebrate their wedding” (well for Kate anyway!). In fact, between the bride and groom, this almost always describes the bride. She left Michigan after high school to attend college, which often means she started her career out of state as well. In turn this meant that she made new friends from different states, and eventually, she met her future husband – who, more than likely, is from another state! Finding clients like Kate and Jason seem to come often to me. This is no surprise, nor abnormal, because I, too, live out of state, having left Michigan after high school for college, started my career, and married someone from another state!
Often in these types of weddings, one of the two (usually the groom) is new to Michigan and grew up in another part of the country. I always enjoy this scenario because it always means a high percentage of the guests from his side are also here visiting. In addition to the bride’s side of the family who are extra excited to see her because she is coming home, the groom’s side are also extra excited because being here means they are on vacation! They travel many miles, arrive at least the day before, stay in one of the great hotels in downtown Detroit, and more than likely began celebrating before the day even begins! There is nothing better for a photographer than being surrounded by happy guests who are excited and full of good cheer! This was certainly the case with Kate and Jason’s guests on both sides, which made their wedding even that more fun to photograph!
The day began and ended at the Westin Book Cadillac, one of Detroit’s premier hotels right in the heart of downtown! The entire day went without a hitch, as it was flawlessly coordinated by Carolyn Hefner and her staff of the China Closet. The ceremony took place at the nearby Historic Trinity Lutheran Church which provided an incredible backdrop to the emotional nuptials of this beautiful couple. After the ceremony and formal portraits on the alter were complete, the guests were shuttled back to the Book Cadillac for the cocktail hour. I joined the wedding party in their trolley for champaign toasts and a trip to Hart Plaza for some cityscape group photos. Once back at the hotel, the reception could begin with the wedding party introductions. There are very few better to get a party started and revved up to a high energy than the Simone Vitale Band. Simone is simply a master on the mic, and has as talented of an assemble of entertainers as any in the whole country!
Katherine and Jason’s wedding could not have been the success it was without their whole selection of high quality vendors, including those already mentioned, as well as Bellisario Florist for their beautiful floral arrangements and decor, and Love and Buttercream for the cake.
