I had the pleasure of getting to know Mark and Christina last fall for a fun and successfull engagement session around downtown Birmingham, Michigan. We started at the landmark hotel, The Townsend, to begin that shoot and that became the location where I would meet Christina getting ready for her wedding day in one of their Presidential Suites. Getting to know them in advance, I knew I was in for a treat on their wedding day!
Usually I will have a second photographer help me on my weddings, but this time I would be photographing alone. Many documentary style photographers I know, prefer to work alone, so it was a challenge I was looking forward to. I must say, it ended working out wonderfully. Normally, the second photographer usually concentrates on the groom, while I spend all my time with the bride before the ceremony. The goal of photographing in my style is to find the unfolding story of the day in photographs, and the groom (for me) doesn’t enter into my cameras frame until the ceremony begins. With this wedding, I spent almost and equal time with both! I enjoyed it so much, that I look forward to the next wedding that affords me the opportunity. Take a look for yourself at the photos below, as well as the complete highlight slideshow of the day by clicking >>>>HERE<<<< Let me know what you think? Personally, I could not be happier!
After spending some time with Christina at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, I headed over to the ceremony location, the Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church, to meet up with Mark and his groomsmen. The church architecture and grounds are absolutely exquisite! It is an incredible location for a fairy tale wedding. It is literally beautiful in every direction. You can see what I mean with the photos of the both Mark and Christina arriving to the church, their time prior to the ceremony, and then the sanctuary itself. Not only did I have a great looking couple to photograph, but the setting for their nuptials was idyllic!
The day was perfectly organized by wedding planner extraordinaire, Carolyn Hefner and her staff of the China Closet! After family portraits on the alter, we headed over to the reception venue, Orchard Lake Country Club. It was an incredible and perfect day for a September wedding! Blue skies and a hint of fall in the air! Living now in Southern California, I must say this is the time of year that I miss the most in my home state of Michigan! We made a few more portraits of the couple with their wedding party, taking advantage of the lakeside setting this country club is famous for, before joining the party for cocktail hour. Finally, the grand entrance of Christina and Mark was made as they walked onto the dance floor, surrounded by their enthusiastic guests. The couple immediately enjoyed their first dance together, followed by their guests dancing with them afterward to get the party off and running! From the dance floor to the dining room, guests enjoyed a fantastic meal as well as toasts from the father of the bride, the maid of honor and best man.
The night would come to a close after my departure, but there was plenty of great photo opportunities throughout the evening, from the cake cutting to the formal dances to their guests cutting it loose on the dance floor. Of course this momentous event would not have been the success it was without the great supporting cast of vendors chosen by Christina and Mark. They include the following:
Planning Services: Carolyn Hefner of the China Closet
Floral Arrangements: Dale Morgan of Blossoms
Decor: Special Events
Music: DJ Jason Parent
Cake: Orchard Lake Country Club
