Like many of my clients over the past few years, my only meeting with Anastasia and Nick was on Skype. They, living in Chicago, and me, in Los Angeles, our “virtual meeting” would result in our meeting in person for the first time on their wedding day in Michigan. It always amazes me how Skype is so effective. When I arrived at Anastasia’s parents’ home to begin photographing her getting ready, it did not enter my mind that this was our first “real” meeting until it was mentioned by her.
Anastasia and Nick were introduced to me by her cousin, Katie, who I know from the great wedding videography company, Fifth and Main Productions. Many of my weddings come my way by word of mouth from former clients and other wedding vendors. Having worked with Fifth and Main for several years now, not only do I know that being retained for the same wedding is going to result in a tremendous collaboration, but that we will have a great time as well. It was an added bonus having Katie to rely on in helping Anastasia and Nick plan their day from another state. With Katie’s knowledge of capturing great events in downtown Detroit, as well as knowing how to optimize the timeline to insure a successful shoot, the day could not have gone any better! The caveat was that the weather included some rain to work around, but in the end, I believe added to a day that had plenty of character!
Anastasia and Nick had a Greek wedding! Detroit is known for its multi-cultural communities, and one of its most famous areas in downtown is Greek Town. Having Italian roots myself, I can remember looking forward to having many dinners with my family in Greek Town, having grown up in the suburbs of Detroit. Having been a wedding photographer for twenty-two years now, I have also photographed my share of Greek weddings! Let me tell you, there is nothing better in my opinion! The closeness of the families, the traditions and culture, the Orthodox ceremony, the food and the dancing: combined together, it makes for an incredible day of photography! It was frosting on the cake that Anastasia and Nick are a great looking couple and are very much in love! Take a look for yourselves at the many photographs above and below! There were literally moments all around us to photograph and I could not be more satisfied with the results! I was blessed to be able to provide a third photographer for this wedding. My cousin, Tom Rollo, an extremely talented wedding photographer from Palm Beach, Florida, flew up to Michigan to provide a hand knowing I had back to back weddings to photograph that weekend. David Yarnall, my long time second photographer (and also very talented), met with Nick getting ready at the Westin Book Cadillac, while Tom provided another angle of coverage with me at Anastasia’s parents home. After the getting ready photos in their respective locations, the couple wanted to take advantage of their late ceremony time by meeting before the wedding for a “first look” and some photos around downtown. They decided to rent a vintage 1949 Packard Hugo and driver which was so smart! Having this car and driver was an added touch of elegance and classiness! Not only was the car a beautiful carriage to transport them to and from the church, but it became a wonderful prop and backdrop for many of the photos! The featured photo above, by the way, was not staged! We actually were pulled over by a Detroit police officer for apparently going through a red light! (The reality, we believe, is he just wanted a closer look at this beautiful car!). I love this photo so much because it exemplifies my style in every respect! As a documentary wedding photographer, I photograph the “real” story of the day and this is no exception! The expressions on Nick and Anastasia’s faces and the officer’s grimace looking at me over the shoulder of the driver is priceless! You can be sure that I will submit this image to a few photo contests!
I could go on describing the rest of the day, but I will let the photos tell the story themselves. From the colorful and tradition-filled ceremony to the energetic dancing at the reception, made this an exceptional and beautiful Greek wedding! As for the locations of the events, the ceremony was held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the reception was celebrated at The Colony Club. The other first class vendors included:
Car and Driver: Motor City Vintage Rentals
DJ: Achilles Papakostantinou and Dennis Theodorou
Video: Fifth and Main Productions
Floral: Wafaa’s Flowers
Cake: Josef’s Bakery
