Suzanne and Zachary’s wedding took place on a beautiful, yet wintery day, in downtown Detroit, Michigan at the stately Detroit Athletic Club! The entirety of their day took place in this beautiful venue, one that I have had the pleasure to photograph many, many times! The DAC has it all! Luxury bedroom suites and meeting rooms for it’s members and guests, world class dining, marble floors and columns, exquisite paintings abound, and a grand, sweeping staircase to the main ballroom. This majestic venue does not have a wall, or a room, or a location anywhere that is an unsuitable backdrop for wedding photography! I simply love photographing weddings here!
Suzanne and Zachary live in Chicago, but came back to southeastern Michigan to celebrate their wedding with family and friends. I have photographed many Michigan weddings in December over the years, so braving the elements would not have been a new experience. On the other hand, having everything in one location for the entire day was a brilliant idea by the bride and groom. From getting ready, to the ceremony and family portraits, to the reception (and even late night bowling!), no one ever had to step foot outside!
I began the day photographing Suzanne and her bridesmaids getting ready in one of the large meeting rooms inside the club, while my associate photographer, David Yarnall, photographed Zachary and his groomsmen. Suzanne was as calm of a bride-getting-ready as I have ever met! Likewise, you can see from the photos, Zachary was just the same. I love these getting-ready photos because it’s always fun to see behind the scenes what the bride and groom are doing separately, how they are displaying emotion, and whether they appear nervous. Suzanne and Zachary were of even keel! As the day would unfold, it would become more and more obvious that this was a couple that seemed to be made for one another!
For me, having photographed, possibly, more weddings here at the DAC then any other venue in southeastern Michigan, it felt like being in my own estate (I can dream, right?). Because we never left the venue, it was kind of like being a kid who knows all the hiding places, and shortcuts from one place to the next! For the remainder of the day, we dashed around this magnificent venue, getting-ready suites, to the main level, to the mezzanine level, to the to the grand ballroom… We photographed portraits of Suzanne and the girls in front of the grand staircase, Zachary and the guys in the Library room. From there, we headed up the back staircase to avoid the traffic of guests arriving for the ceremony…After the ceremony, the guests cleared out of the end-wing to the middle room on the Mezzanine for the cocktail hour, while we photographed a few family and wedding party portraits….then Suzanne, Zachary, my assistant and I, slipped downstairs to photograph some fun photos of them seated in the old-style phone booths. From there, the celebration was underway! The couple made their first appearance as husband and wife toward the end of the cocktail hour, where they cut the cake and fed each other first tastes! Guests were soon afterward seated in the iconic and ornate Grand Ballroom, and a formal entrance was made by the wedding party, followed by toasts, dinner and dancing!
