Like many of my clients, Carolyn and Andrew were referred by friends of former clients whose wedding I had photographed. I have found that meeting new clients this way is the absolute best way! There is an understanding of my style and a level of confidence that is built in to the relationship right from the start! I noticed this from the very beginning with this awesome couple! They had secured me as their wedding photographer prior to our meeting in person. We actually met for the first time during their engagement photo session last summer! Carolyn and Andrew are the friendliest couple you will ever meet! One advantage of an engagement session is that it gives me a chance to get to know each of their personalities in advance of the wedding. Because we had a such a great shoot that day, my expectation was extremely high for the wedding day!
Fast forward to this past June, when the wedding day finally arrived! Carolyn and Andrew’s wedding took place in its entirety at the stately and historic Detroit Athletic Club in downtown Detroit – one of my favorite venues to photograph weddings! From getting ready, the ceremony and reception, to midnight bowling, the wedding party never had to leave the premises! For me, the day began with catching up with Caroyln and the girls in one of the executive meeting suites where the girls were gathered for lunch. As a documentary photographer, something like eating lunch on one’s wedding day might not sound all that exciting to photograph but the opposite couldn’t be more true. For example, there was lots of laughter and the girls were relaxed and enjoying each other’s company. Starting my job with a simple event like this allows me to ease into the day as unobtrusively as possible. It also gives me a chance to begin to understand the various personalities I will be photographing and to prepare myself mentally for the rest of the day.
Carolyn was the ultimate bride….happy, giddy, friendly, courteous, emotional and excited…She was organized and must have planned a lifetime for her big day! Back in her suite, she had everything laid out perfectly. Her dress was hanging, her jewelry and shoes were on display, as well as was a prayer book from her grandmother. Everything was ready to be photographed and I was back with girls getting my signature documentary moments with very little time away! This was how well the day went!.Everything was well planned and efficient! The end result was that my team and I were able to capture a wealth of meaningful photographs that beautifully captured the story of day.
A couple of fun great highlights of the day were the surprise appearance of the Michigan State University mascot, “Sparty!” The couple also were lucky to have their wedding day fall on the same day as a Detroit Tiger baseball game. The venue overlooks center field of Comerica Field and after the game was over, we were able to take Carolyn and Andrew to a location right beneath where fireworks were being launched for the post game celebration!
