I had been looking forward to Thanh and Tim’s wedding since they commissioned me earlier this year. I remember meeting them in a West LA coffee shop and knew that they would be a great couple to work with! They were both very easy going and relaxed. They were very excited about getting married to each other and had selected a wonderful location to celebrate their nuptials! Their wedding was to be held at a venue I had photographed a couple of times before, but only as the second shooter behind friends of mine who were the primary photographers for each wedding. The Castle Green in Old Town Pasadena is a very unique and beautiful location for a wedding! It is a Nationally Registered Historic Monument built in 1898 during the Victorian era. Both the interior and exterior have been restored and take you back in time to the Golden Age of America. It is a wonderful location to host both a wedding ceremony and reception. Needless to say, with all the visual delights that this beautiful venue offers, I was very excited to finally be the primary photographer here!
The wedding day coverage began with photographing Thanh and Tim starting out their day at the Hilton Pasadena. Because the couple would be getting ready separately, it was important to have my associate, Michael, help photograph Tim getting ready, while I spent my time with Thanh and her bridesmaids. Michael provided the necessary coverage that would have been impossible for me to capture simultaneous to photographing Thanh! He also would stay on to provide added coverage through the ceremony and reception. After leaving the Hilton with the wedding party, the remainder of the day would be photographed at The Castle Green.
Thanh chose not to get into her dress until after arriving at the venue in the bride’s dressing room. Seeing the beautiful windows while I waited for her to change, I knew it would be a mistake to not step outside of my photojournalistic style, and do a few portraits of Thanh in this setting. As I expected, she was stunning in her dress! You can see one of these beautiful portraits below with Thanh looking out the window!
What I enjoyed about Thanh and Tim’s wedding was how well it flowed! I think it was a combination of the turn of the century “yesteryear” setting of The Castle Green, having both the ceremony and reception in the same location, and that we did all the formal portraits before the ceremony began. I never felt like we had to rush! I don’t think anyone else was feeling that either! Perhaps the biggest reason for this was that there was more than enough time to get all the required portraits done, which would not have happened without the bride and groom agreeing to see one another before the ceremony. To do this, Thanh and Tim decided to stage a “first look” so that they could enjoy together a moment where they both saw each other for the first time, yet privately. You can see this unfolding event below with the photos of the couple on the staircase. The photo above, was taken just prior, as Thanh made her way up the staircase before Tim arrived onto the scene.
The ceremony was gorgeous – as you can clearly see for yourselves. It took place on the lush gardens of The Castle Green in front of a lily pond. The Victorian mansion provided a stately and ornate backdrop for such a memorable occasion! Cocktail hour took place along the arched walkway and veranda of the mansion, as well as inside the restored interior with its original antique furniture and plush velvet drapes. Finally, the party began with a Grand Entrance of the wedding party and the first introduction of the couple as the new Mr. and Mrs. Neville! Toasts were made by the best man and maid of honor, and a thank you by Tim and Thanh. Dinner was served and then the dancing began! I must say that I think I have discovered my favorite wedding band in Southern California! Thanh and Tim selected Past Action Heroes, a crazy 1980’s cover band to entertain the guests and rock the night away! Check them out below!!! I have photographed 100’s of weddings and I have never seen, nor been entertained by such a fun and highly talented band like this! They had the dance floor packed and highly energized! In fact, to see more photos of this band and the unfolding story of the entire day, check out the entire highlight slideshow of this fantastic wedding by clicking >>>>>HERE<<<<<
