I remember the first time I spoke with Jaime! She was so full of enthusiasm and excitement about her wedding! She was thrilled about having her wedding at the Colony Club and all she needed was a photographer to capture the beautiful moments of the day that she anticipated! She also knew exactly what she was looking for in a wedding photographer and made it clear that I was the one for her! Let me tell you, it doesn’t get better than than that when meeting a potential client! One of the reasons I enjoy writing these blog posts, is because it gives me a chance to reflect on the couple, how we met, remembering our early conversations, and then finally seeing the end product a year or so after our first meeting! All I can do is share a mental image with the couple as they tell me about what they hope their wedding to be like…When the day finally arrives, the dream turns into reality. What we had talked about in theory months before, is now a real life happening! I love what I do because I get to meet great people like Jaime and Geoff, participate in the most important day of their lives, and witness their unique story unfold before my camera!
I met Jaime at the MGM Grand Hotel in Detroit, a popular location for couples getting ready on their wedding day, especially if they are having a ceremony at one of the historic churches downtown. I was able to arrive in time to catch the final stages of Jaime with her hair and makeup artists doing there thing. All the bridesmaids were also in the suite getting ready. Soon after the room was a sea of pink dresses. Jaime was the last to step into hers, and before you knew it, we were all boarding the party bus and bound for Fort Street Presbyterian Church. Because of the way the day was scheduled, we did not photograph the guys getting ready. Instead, Geoff’s day began at the church, where my second photographer, David Yarnall, was waiting for his arrival. An interesting coincidence was discovered just days before the wedding: David’s wife, prior to their marriage, was Jaime’s family’s live-in babysitter when Jaime was a little girl!
It had been a while since I had last photographed the historic Fort Street Presbyterian Church. It is a magnificent piece of architecture, originally built in 1855. During one period of time, the 265 foot steeple made the church to be among the tallest churches in the United States. The interior of the church has a horseshoe balcony which allows viewers to stand above and behind the alter, which we took full advantage of! David stayed in the balcony area for most of the ceremony and photographed some unique angles, not usually accessible for most church weddings. One of them is shown in the photos below! It was a beautiful ceremony in every respect. From a photographers perspective, it was difficult to capture a bad image! The ceremony was filled with emotion and meaning. Family friend of Jaime’s father, Pastor Rick Foreman, officiated the nuptials. There was also a candle lit in memory of Geoff’s father. After being pronounced husband and wife, the recessional was something to behold! The entire wedding party, bride and groom included, danced their way down the aisle to Motown music! After the ceremony, Jaime and Geoff exited out the main doors of the church to adoring family and friends who showered them with rose petals!
The reception took place at The Colony Club. I absolutely love photographing weddings in this venue because it has, possibly, the most beautiful interior of any venue I’ve ever photographed. From the high arches over the tall windows, to the ornate gold-leaf decorations on the ceiling and walls, to the balcony views looking down upon the scene…photographing a reception here cannot be beat! I have had the luxury of photographing many weddings at the Colony Club since it was reopened so I feel right at home! For Jaime and Geoff, they could not have been a more perfect couple to celebrate their wedding here! This couple was so energetic and expressive! With smiles and laughter on their faces at all times and with the backdrop of the Colony Club architecture surrounding them, the results spell “gorgeous wedding photography!” And that is what they gave us! From the high energy grand entrance to the fantastically choreographed first dance, I thought we were on the stage of “Dancing With the Stars!” And the rest of the evening followed suit! Of course, it didn’t hurt that Jaime and Geoff had selected the Jerry Ross Band for their entertainment! There are only one or two others bands in Detroit who rival them in providing top notch talent and music. After the cake cutting and speeches, there was never a time during the evening that the dance floor was not packed!
This wedding had it all! It was a gorgeous and beautiful event! You can see for yourself by scrolling down and seeing some of my favorite moments of the day! You can also see the entire collection of highlight photos in a slideshow set to music by clicking >>>>>HERE<<<<<
